Lucy Davis is a simple, naïve, and unimposing young woman who has set out on her own for the first time. She has a bleeding-heart for children and for animals and hopes to one day become a pediatric nurse. At the same time, Lucy is painfully shy and carries a tremendous amount of baggage from childhood trauma. She grew up in a modest household with neglectful parents and a horrible brother who emotionally and sexually abused her. When her first boyfriend becomes manipulative and cruel, Lucy doesn’t stand a chance. Her inner core is weak and vulnerable because of PTSD which causes her to become obsessive and delusional and to ultimately lose control of any rational decision making. Who’s ultimately responsible for Lucy landing on death row? Must Lucy bear all the blame for her crimes?
Lucy’s first boyfriend Brian Potthoff manipulates his way into Lucy’s life to gain what he can to support his drug habit. After draining Lucy's bank account and taking over her car, Brian ends the relationship and leaves Lucy emotionally desolate.
Vicki is a senile homeless woman living on the streets of Phoenix. As a ruse to gain Lucy’s sympathy, Brian claims that Vicki is his mother.
